California: Crop situation as of September 9, 2023

11/09/2023 - François-Xavier Branthôme - 2023 Season
According to figures collected by PTAB, the California’s 2023 processing tomato harvest tonnage for the week nine (ending September 9th) is estimated to deliver 932,518 t (metric tonnes) (1,027,925 short tons) to the factories.

Week ten (ending September 16th) is estimated to be 944,364 t (1,040,983 short tons) which would bring the year-to-date total to an estimated 6,814,168 t (7,511,335 short tons).
For actual tonnes delivered (4.937 million t) through week eight, California is tracking above (+5.5%) the five year average (4.68 million t).

The 2023 California Organic processing tomato deliveries for the week eight (ending September 2nd) were 33,316 t (36,718 short tons). The total tons YTD for week eight is 465,705 t (513,352 short tons), or 10% of the actual total delivered quantities.
Despite some delay due to rains during spring planting, the current total is the second largest in the history of California organic production. Provisional total is 10% higher than in 2022 on the same date and 6% higher than the average quantity processed during past three seasons at this time.

If the weekly projections come true, the projected quantities on September 2 would represent approximately 53% of the California processors' target (10.89 million t).
