California: Crop situation as of September 2, 2023

04/09/2023 - François-Xavier Branthôme - 2023 Season
According to figures collected by PTAB, the California’s 2023 processing tomato harvest tonnage for the week eight (ending September 2nd) is estimated to deliver 980,755 t (metric tonnes) (1,081,057 short tons) to the factories.

Week nine (ending September 9th) is estimated to be 984,347 t (1,085,057 short tons) which would bring the year-to-date total to an estimated 5,946,094 t (6,554,447 short tons).
For actual tonnes delivered (3.981 million t) through week seven, California is tracking above (+6%) the five year average (3.77 million t).

The 2023 California Organic processing tomato deliveries for the week seven (ending August 26th) were 42,736 t (47,113 short tons). The total tons YTD for week seven is 432,386 t (476,624 short tons), or 11% of the actual total delivered quantities.
Organic farming was delayed by rains during spring planting, but the current total is already the second largest in the history of California organic production. Provisional total is 10% higher than in 2022 on the same date and 6% higher than the average quantity processed during past three seasons at this time.

If the weekly projections come true, the projected quantities on September 2 would represent approximately 46% of the California processors' target (10.89 million t).
