California: Crop situation as of August 12, 2023

14/08/2023 - François-Xavier Branthôme - 2023 Season
According to figures collected by PTAB, California processing tomato deliveries in 2023 are steadily increasing and approaching the weekly threshold of 1 million short tons. It should be remembered, however, that this year's harvest started 7 to 12 days later than usual.
For week five (ending August 12th) PTAB is estimating 839,944 metric tonnes (mT) (925,880 short tons (sT)) were delivered to the factories. Week six (ending August 19th) is estimated to be 970,328 mT (1,969,603 sT) which would bring the year-to-date total to an estimated 3,136,133 mT (3,456,995).
For actual tonnes delivered (1.325 million mT) through week four, California is tracking above (+2%) the five year average (1.302 million mT).

The 2023 California Organic processing tomato deliveries for the week four (ending August 5th) were 78,282 mT (86,299 sT). The total tons YTD for week four is 253,956 mT (279,939 sT), or 19% of the actual total delivered quantities.
The organic crop is producing below average compared to previous years due to harvest being delayed from rains during spring plantings. Provisional total is 18% lower than in 2022 on the same date and 19% lower than the average quantity processed during past three seasons at this time.

If the weekly projections come true, the projected quantities on August 19 would represent approximately 26% of the California processors' target. (10.89 million mT).
