California: Weekly tonnage as of 5 August 2023

08/08/2023 - François-Xavier Branthôme - 2023 Season
According to the figures collected by PTAB, the 2023 California processing tomato deliveries are steadily increasing.

For week four (ending August 5th) PTAB is estimating 651,883 metric tonnes (mT) (718,578 short tons (sT)) were delivered to the factories. Week five (ending August 12th) is estimated to be 816,893 mT (900,470 sT) which would bring the year-to-date total to an estimated 2,148,219 mT (2,368,006 sT).

For actual tonnes delivered (0.679 million mT) through week three, California is tracking above (+8%) the five year average (0.627 million mT). it should be remembered, however,  that this year's harvest started 7 to 12 days later than usual.

The 2023 California Organic processing tomato deliveries for the week two (ending July 22th) were 96,143 mT (105,989 sT). The total tons YTD for week two is 14% of the actual total delivered quantities.
The organic crop is producing below average compared to previous years due to harvest being delayed from rains during spring plantings. Provisional total is 33% lower than in 2022 on the same date and 45% lower than the average quantity processed during past three seasons at this time.

If the weekly projections come true, the projected quantities on August 12 would represent approximately 21% of the California processors' target. (10.89 million mT).
