California: tomato processors contract for 10.5 million metric tonnes

31/05/2021 - Press release , François-Xavier Branthôme - 2021 Season
This estimate is 4.1% lower than the January forecast

As of May 15, California’s tomato processors reported they have or will have contracts for 11.6 million short tons (10.523 million metric tonnes) of processing tomatoes for 2021. This production estimate is 4.1% lower than the January intentions forecast of 12,100 million short tons and 2.5% above the final 2020 contracted production total. The May contracted acreage of 231,000 (93,300 hectares) is 3.8% below the January intentions forecast of 240,000 acres and 3,000 acres less than last year’s final contracted acreage.

This change in US processing intentions (and a few others reported in our May 24 WPTC report) slightly modifies the forecast level of global processing activity for the 2021 season, which now stands at around 38.8 million tonnes.

In the current state of the monthly and quarterly rates of apparent consumption, the quantities forecast for the 2021 season appear appreciably lower than the annual consumption figure (estimated at around 12.1 million metric tonnes); information relating to the level of stocks on June 1, 2021 and US foreign activity will soon be available and will provide more details, but current dynamics already suggest that stocks on June 1, 2022 could be extremely low.
