« Il pomodoro per la ricerca » raised 500 000 Euros

19/05/2022 - François-Xavier Branthôme - Lire en français
The Italian industry mobilized in favor of pediatric oncology

"Tomato for Research. Good for You, Good for the Environment": During the fifth edition of the event, nearly 500,000 euros were raised for pediatric oncology. The Umberto Veronesi Foundation, with the valuable contribution of the ANICAV and RICREA, distributed more than 36,500 units of tomato products in more than 400 distribution points throughout Italy in order to support scientific research against cancer that affects children and young people.

Thanks to the invaluable support of over 1,500 volunteers, "Tomato for Research. Good for You, Good for the Environment", an event hosted by the Umberto Veronesi Foundation in many places throughout Italy on the last weekend of April 2022, confirmed its important contribution to scientific research against childhood cancer, raising nearly EUR 500,000 to help finance an innovative treatment protocol for children with neuroblastoma, a tumor of the peripheral nervous system that is the third most common malignant tumor in children after leukemia and brain tumors.

The event was made possible thanks to the essential contribution of the National Association of Canned Vegetable operators (ANICAV) and the National Consortium for the Recycling and Valorization of Steel Packaging (RICREA), which once again this year adopted and supported the initiative with great enthusiasm.
In the many distribution points throughout Italy, volunteers distributed the packages consisting of three cans of tomatoes for a donation of 10 euros: peeled tomatoes, tomato pulp, and cherry tomatoes. The tomato, which is an essential food item in the kitchen, represents the importance of supporting the aim for excellence in scientific research.

"Thanks to the great sensitivity, commitment and dedication shown by our volunteers, donors and valuable partners, Anicav and Ricrea, who have been by our side for years to develop this important project, it has been possible to achieve an excellent result in favor of scientific research in the field of pediatric oncology," explained Monica Ramaioli, General Manager of the Umberto Veronesi Foundation.
"The extraordinary result obtained makes us proud of what we have done and gives us even more enthusiasm to return to the streets for the next edition of the event," said ANICAV President Marco Serafini. "Special thanks to the entire tomato industry, the volunteers who made this possible, and especially to the many people who generously supported the project with their donations."

The new competition "A Scuola con il Pomodoro per la Ricerca" was a great success, mobilizing primary and secondary schools to carry out fundraising efforts featuring the event, "Il Pomodoro per la Ricerca. Buono per te, Buono per l’Ambiente." Their contribution also allowed the schools to win vouchers for the purchase of educational materials as well as information brochures provided by the RICREA Consortium on issues related to protecting the planet and recycling.
