California crop forecast down to 10.069 million mT

01/09/2021 - Press release , François-Xavier Branthôme - 2021 Season
On August 31st, 2021, the USDA revised the 2021 California crop down to 10.069 million metric tonnes (mT) (11.1 million short tons (sT)). This new production forecast is 1.9% below last year’s contracted production, and is a 4.3% decrease from the May 28th estimate of 11.6 million sT. Contracted acres dropped from 231,000 acres (93,480 hectares) to 227,000 acres (91,860 ha). This will result at 109.6 mT/ha (48.9 sT per acre).
According to the comment of professional sources, if this reduced 2021 crop estimate is realized, the US inventory position will diminish further against what is already a historical low.

Drought concerns impacted planting decisions for the 2021 processing tomato crop and acreage has decreased significantly from early season intentions. Extreme high temperatures in May and throughout the summer lowered expected yields and slowed down operations at the canneries. Crop quality is reported to be average or slightly above average.
