Egypt: the 2021 sun-dried tomato season has started

27/01/2021 - François-Xavier Branthôme - Lire en français
The new sun-dried tomato processing season began in Upper Egypt in the early days of 2021.

This product development project, supervised by Dr. Predieis, was launched in 2011 when UNIDO (United Nations Industrial Development Organization) wanted to give local farmers the opportunity to develop a remunerative activity in the tomato sector.

Egypt, which is one of the five largest producers of raw tomatoes in the world, was until then mostly limited to the production and sale of fresh produce and, for several years, only processed part of the crop, notably into triple-concentrated paste (see additional information below).

The UNIDO project, reports Dr. Predielis, ended in 2018, and since that date several companies have emerged in the sector, producing high quality sun-dried tomatoes.

The regions where drying operations are carried out are concentrated around Qena, Luxor and Aswan. This year, the surfaces devoted to the production of oblong tomatoes intended for drying covered more than 350 hectares. The season started a month late due to the high temperatures at the time of transplanting (August 2020), which resulted in significant losses.
The season is expected to last until the end of March.

Some complementary data
The quantities produced for processing in Egypt have developed extremely rapidly, growing from practically zero to around 400,000 tonnes in 2020.
