Mutti strengthens its focus on exports

01/11/2023 - François-Xavier Branthôme
The Group's foreign operations account for 53% of profits
Mutti canned tomatoes make profits of EUR 14 million and conquer foreign markets, where they now sell more than in Italy.

The Parma-based company, a leader in tomato processing, which has also entered the fresh ready-to-use soups segment since 2022, has consolidated its balance sheet with a significant figure: sales outside the country's borders account for 53% of the total, and now exceed sales in Italy (47%). The Mutti Group, present with its products in some 100 countries worldwide, closed 2022 with total sales of EUR 563 million, recording growth of 16% against 2021 results.

Already this summer, the company recorded "foreign" sales of EUR 286 million, i.e. around 51% of the total, exceeding for the first time the results generated within Italy, valued at EUR 277 million and 49% of the total.

Currently, the Mutti group is the market leader in seven European countries: France, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland, Slovenia and Italy. In Germany, where the company opened its fifth branch in January 2022, it is consolidating its position as the market's second-largest brand. Growth also continued outside Europe, in Australia and the United States.

The holding company owned by Francesco Mutti continues to grow and become stronger. In recent weeks, as reported in Quotidiano Nazionale, the shareholders of the Red Lions – the Mutti family holding company chaired by Marcello Mutti (Francesco's father) – have set aside as a reserve the entire 2022 ordinary profit (EUR 2.5 million, compared with 4.2 million in 2021), raising net worth to over EUR 106 million. Although impacted by higher energy costs, net revenues rose from EUR 437.3 to EUR 512.7 million, and net profits have shifted from EUR 14.6 to around 14 million.
