Italy: the fight against killer bacteria affecting processing tomato crops

24/09/2021 - François-Xavier Branthôme - Lire en français
Rabboni: “The new regional plan jointly set up with the IO is a good one”

The fight against Ralstonia solanacearum is a battle that we must fight together – growers, processors and institutions. The green light from Emilia Romagna regional authorities for the plan to fight the tomato-killing bacteria is a program jointly carried out with the IO and represents a very positive step for the whole industry, as it takes into account all the different aspects: measures intended to cleanse processing installations, appropriate crop rotations, the study of innovative techniques and confirmation of compensation for affected growers.”

These are the terms used by Tiberio Rabboni, president of the interbranch organization for northern Italy's tomato processing industry, when commenting the announcement that the Region had greenlighted the anti-Ralstonia plan.
Since 2017, stated Rabboni, the Emilia Romagna region, the regional plant health agency, the Parma and Piacenza plant health Consortium and the Pomodoro Nord IO have entered into close and fruitful collaboration to fight against the propagation of plant diseases and pest infestations affecting tomato crops, particularly the red spider mite and Ralstonia Solanacearum.

As an interbranch organization, we have been promoting the work of two IOG (Innovation Operational Groups) dedicated to the fight against the red spider and Ralstonia. Furthermore, in compliance with the indications of the European "Omnibus" regulation, we have taken on an active role in managing plant health problems by compensating growers who have been impacted by Ralstonia, or by applying to regional authorities in this respect, as well as ensuring, thanks to IO resources, that part of the funds owed to affected operators are provisioned, as they must wait before receiving regional compensation. We also provide support, notably financial, to launch trials for methods to cleanse processing plants that might be accidentally contaminated by the bacteria.

In this context, the region has accepted, specifically in response to a request from the interbranch organization, to activate and help fund a three-year action plan (2021-2023) aimed at improving knowledge of the bacteria, its methods of dissemination, innovative techniques to control it and a reliable system to cleanse installations and soil.

As of today, the three-year plan will be implemented in order to protect tomato crops on our territory, thanks to an agreement concluded with the Consorzio Phytosanitario of Parma and Piacenza, and the SSICA (the experimental station for canned foods) in Parma. This organization, along with the Department of sustainable plant production of the Catholic University of the Holy Heart in Piacenza, will study how to disinfect processing plants in the event of them accidentally coming into contact with Ralstonia. In our capacity of IO for northern Italy, we want to thank the Emilia Romagna region for having listened to our requests and translated them into such an important result for the protection of the processing tomato industry as a whole.
