Avignon, famed for art, was the centre of Christianity during the 14th century and has inherited an extraordinary legacy from this period: chapels, churches, city walls and of course the Palais des Papes and St Bénézet bridge, which are listed as UNESCO world heritage sites. The theatre festival, set up by Jean Vilar, held in the summer, is a global event in the world of live theatre. Thanks to its rich history, heritage and vibrant all-year-round cultural scene, Avignon was elected European city of culture in 2000. Discover the joys of Provençal gastronomy and sample some fine Côtes du Rhône wine – of which Avignon is the capital.

The city located at the crossroads of Provence and the Languedoc, near the Mediterranean, the Camargue, the Luberon and the Alpilles, is the ideal place to stay if you're visiting Provence.
For more information see or the Avignon Tourist Office which kindly gave us the electronic English version of 2 of their brochures: Loisirs et Patrimoine (with a map and strolls in the city) and Tarifs guides et produits for more services. They also gave us maps that we will distribute at the start of the Conference, for you to explore the city center at your leisure.

The travel agency Provence Voyages can help you with booking your transfers and your excursions in and around Avignon. You can contact them by email at

You can also use a private driver for guided tours in the region: Driver BC.
