Unprecedented tomato price increase in the north of Italy

13/04/2022 - Press release , Sophie Colvine - 2022 Season
On 12 April, a framework agreement was reached for the management of the next campaign in the Northern Basin with an unprecedented increase in price. Negotiations are, however, still underway in the Central South basin.

After a long and intense negotiation with the agricultural part, the Framework Agreement was reached for the management of the next tomato processing campaign in the Northern Italy basin. The agreement provides for the confirmation of the 2021 contractual framework for the regulatory part with a reference price of 109,50 euros per tonne ex field, the highest ever annual increase at over 18%, and an increase of about 40% in just four years.

A sense of responsibility has prevailed", declared Bruna Saviotti, coordinator of the Territorial Committee of the Northern Basin of ANICAV, "despite the difficult period for the industry, we have recognized, not without difficulty, a significant increase in the average price compared to the last campaign to meet the critical issues expressed by the agricultural sector. This is, of course, an unprecedented increase linked to the extraordinary nature of the moment we are experiencing characterized by the war events that are causing increases in the energy field, by the particular trend of inflation as well as by an important drought in our production basin. "

On the other hand, the negotiations
are continuing in the Central South Basin where the agricultural sector has put on the table a proposed price increase far greater than what was recognized in the North.

As ANICAV we are doing our part" said Marco Serafini, President of ANICAV, "the increase in the cost of raw materials will add to the generalized increase in production costs, in particular of primary and secondary packaging and energy, creating many difficulties for companies. Our hope is that all the other players in the supply chain recognize the efforts that the processing industry is making ".
