Red Gold embraces technology at expanded distribution center

20/09/2022 - François-Xavier Branthôme
Elwood-based tomato processor Red Gold Inc. has started operations at a 250,000-square-foot (23,000 m²) expansion of its distribution center in Alexandria. The company says the additional space includes a technologically advanced racking system that allows it to move products more efficiently and helps to reduce truck traffic.

Red Gold says the addition connects to its processing plant in neighboring Orestes which allows workers to send finished goods to the warehouse without loading trucks for the short trip.

By connecting our factory to the DC and utilizing this innovative system, we are able to remove 9,000 semi-truck trips between Orestes and the Distribution Center on State Road 28, alleviating the amount of truck traffic for the town of Orestes,” said Red Gold Chief Operations Officer Beau Reichart.

The new building and existing warehouse received wireless technology allowing operators to connect to forklifts and shuttles.
This project also features new automated rack shuttles (skid movers) which are remote controlled. These robots move skids forward and backward on the rack aisles, making it possible to get so many pallets perfectly & safely stored,” said Reichart.

The company says the new automation does not replace any Red Gold employees. The food maker currently has several job openings.
