La Doria: halving emissions by 2031

18/07/2024 - François-Xavier Branthôme
The La Doria group, specialist in the production of tomato products, sauces, legumes and fruit juices, aims to reduce by 46.2% direct greenhouse gas emissions from its production activity and indirect emissions, for example, from the purchase of electricity, by 2031.

According to data released in its 2023 Sustainability Report, La Doria has already achieved important goals. Over the last five years, as reported by the Italian press, the group has invested 142 million in sustainable development, including more than 20 for ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) initiatives. These investments enabled a reduction in CO2 emissions of 7,123 tonnes thanks to heat and energy recovery; at the same time, the company recovered 98% of waste and reduced CO2 emissions by 283,000 tonnes thanks to the agreement with the railway company Gts.
These targets commit us to cutting greenhouse gas emissions by 46.2% in ten years (from 2021) for direct production emissions (Scope 1) and for indirect emissions, such as those relating to the purchase of electricity (Scope 2), and to cutting indirect emissions in our value chain (Scope 3) by 32.3%. With this in mind, to support the objectives of reducing emissions, we have invested in a new tomato juice concentration plant at our Sarno facility, and a photovoltaic plant at our Angri facility”, explains Antonio Ferraioli, La Doria’s Chief Executive Officer in the introductory letter to the 2023 report.

Between 2023 and 2024, the company installed two new photovoltaic systems in the Angri and Parma factories, in addition to those positioned in the Sarno, Fisciano (Sa) factories and those of the LDH subsidiary in the United Kingdom. The Group also has two cogeneration plants for the production of electricity and steam. With these installations, it covered 39.4% of its energy needs through self-production in 2023.
