Italy, 2024: a long and difficult season

26/11/2024 - Press release , François-Xavier Branthôme - 2024 Season
Processing tomato: 2024 season closed with 5.3 million tons of processed product
Anicav: “long and difficult campaign due to adverse weather conditions”

According to the press release published by ANICAV on November 22, 2024, “the 2024 tomato processing season in Italy closed with a production of 5.3 million tonnes, slightly down (-2.5%) compared to 2023 but with a substantial decline compared to the plans made, in particular in the Northern basin, despite a greater investment in hectares at a national level (+11% on 2023).

A very complex campaign with drought in the South and excessive rain in the North that caused frequent factory shutdowns and extended the processing period until the beginning of November.
Analyzing in detail, 2.87 million tons were processed in the Center-South (+10% compared to 2023) while in the Northern basin the final processed amount was 2.4 million tons (-14% compared to last year). All this despite the increase in transplanted areas compared to the last processing campaign.

A worsening of agricultural yields was recorded, more markedly in the North, and of industrial yields, in both production basins, given the need to use greater quantities of raw material to be able to guarantee the high quality standards that have always characterized our production, with a significant impact on production costs.

Italy confirms itself as the third tomato processing country in the world, after China (which recorded an increase of 31% compared to 2023 and 68% on 2022) and the USA (down 14% on the last campaign).

The increase in production in China represents a major source of concern for the Italian tomato processing industry: although it does not directly affect our production - we recall that Italy is the world's leading exporter of tomato products destined directly for the final consumer - the increase in exports within the EU by countries that produce below the minimum thresholds of environmental and social sustainability risks affecting internal trade dynamics, damaging workers, consumers and the environment.

For this reason, to protect the supply chain, ANICAV believes it is necessary to implement a series of initiatives at EU level aimed, on the one hand, at introducing the principle of reciprocity whereby everyone must have and respect the same rules and, on the other, at extending to the European level the rule, already in force in Italy, according to which the tomato puree must be obtained only from fresh tomatoes and must show on the label the region of production of the tomato and, if the production cycle allows it, also the area where the tomato was grown.

"The one just concluded was a very complicated campaign. - says Marco Serafini, President of ANICAV – The problems related to the management of water resources, in particular, have had a significant impact on the progress of the campaign and, if no measures are taken, the situation in both the North and the South could become unsustainable in the coming years. There is therefore a need for infrastructural interventions aimed at making the supply chain more efficient and avoiding the risks associated with the water emergency: the construction of the Vetto dam in the Northern basin and the creation of an infrastructural work connecting the Occhito dam, in the province of Foggia, and the Liscione dam, in the province of Campobasso, would represent an important first response for our sector.”

In addition to the climate variable, the price of the raw material remains a burden on companies, which continues to be the highest in the world, also due to the high costs that the agricultural sector must face.
"To remain competitive, it will be a priority, in an increasingly globalized context such as the one in which our companies operate, to start working, both in the North and in the South, to rebalance tomato prices. - declares Giovanni De Angelis, General Manager of ANICAV - To this end, it is no longer possible to postpone working to find innovative solutions that can lead to production efficiency by focusing, even more and better, on varietal research, on the evolution of production techniques and rethinking the organization and size of agricultural companies, always safeguarding the quality and safety of production and respect for workers."

These issues of great importance and relevance for the sector will be discussed during the ANICAV public assembly, Il Filo Rosso del Pomodoro, Tra infrastrutture strategice e tutela del Made in Italy - scheduled in Parma, at the Paganini Auditorium, on December 3 - which will be attended by representatives of the institutions and the Government and the main players in the tomato processing sector and professional representation in agriculture.
