Cameroon: Delifood to invest CFA 4 billion into a tomato processing plant

28/03/2023 - François-Xavier Branthôme
Cameroonian company Delifood Agroindustries Sarl announced at the end of 2022 it will invest CFA4 billion (Euro 61,000, USD 62,000) to build a tomato processing plant in Douala, the economic capital. An agreement was signed on November 4 between Jean Marie Louis Badga, Director General of the Agency for the Promotion of Small and Medium Enterprises (APME) and the promoter of Delifood agroindustries Sarl, under the incentives for private investment. The agreement will allow the company to benefit from the reduction of taxes, customs fees in relation to the import of inputs.

The company will release 4 billion FCFA for the development of its industrial complex for the production, processing and marketing of canned tomatoes. In its first phase, the start of which is imminent, the project aims to produce 5,400 tonnes of canned tomatoes with the key to creating 150 jobs. An extension of investments will then follow, the outlines of which have not been specified by the company, but which will nevertheless generate 450 jobs.

The creation of this complex is an opportunity to reduce post-harvest losses of tomatoes. Tomato is one of the most consumed foodstuffs by the population, with an annual production estimated at 889,800 tonnes per year. According to FAO data, most of the production comes from the Western region which has more than 329,000 smallholders. According to the DG of APME, Marie Louis Badga, this initiative will bring some stability to the local tomato sector. “Tomato prices are sometimes high but other times, they are so low that producers find it difficult to get by.”
