California: Crop situation as of 4 September

For week ten ending September 4th, PTAB is estimating 788,170 metric tonnes (mT) (868,809 short tons, sT) will have been delivered to the factories; another 787,087 mT (867,615 sT) are estimated to be harvested in week eleven which ends September 11th. Provisional total (6,856,217 mT) at this date would still be almost 13% lower than the average quantity processed during past three seasons at this time (7,850,068 mT). The current cap on weekly quantities is consistent with the revised figure of harvest forecasts to 10.1 million mT.

The 2021 California Organic processing tomato deliveries for the ninth week ending August 28th were 43,147 mT (47,566 sT). The total tons YTD for week ending August 28th is 498,348 mT (549,335 sT), or 7.5% of the total delivered quantities. Provisional total is 25% higher than in 2020 on the same date and 38% higher than the average quantity processed during past three seasons at this time.

PTAB figures for week ending August 28 state that 227,370 loads were delivered to date (7,116 less loads delivered in 2021 than in 2020), of which 64% were delivered in the Southern region (and 26% in the North), with YTD solids reaching 5.32 compared to 5.37 for the same time period in the 2020 season, or 0.05 lower.

Taking the current figures into consideration, quantities being harvested will bring the provisional processed total just above 68% of the new official target of the season (10.07 million mT or 11.1 million sT).
