WPTC Crop update as of 23 June 2017

26/06/2017 - WPTC - 2017 Season
Global forecast remains stable at 38.8 million mT
Few changes have occurred since the last situation (1 June). Despite the heat waves - and even drought conditions - that affected several major production regions, the global
processing forecast as of 23 June remains close to 38.5 million metric tonnes for 2017. Here are the latest information collected by WPTC delegates.

AMITOM countries
EU countries:
France
All the surfaces were planted with no real issues. The heatwave of the last few days does not seem to have caused any flower abortion. There is a risk of limited water availability both in the southeast and the south-west but storms are forecast for next week. The forecast is maintained.

Greece
In Greece the issue is more too much water rather than too little, with a wet weather and intense hailstorms which have caused major losses ten days ago reducing the forecast from 460,000 tonnes to 430,000 tonnes. The weather is now good although a mini heatwave is forecast for next week.

Italy
In the north, planting ended during the first week of June under good conditions. There is, however, a major worry about drought particularly in the southern part of the Po valley (Parma and Piacenza areas especially) with already some issues with irrigation and emergency water levels. Temperatures in June were higher than average with some peaks of 35°C and this increases water shortage even further and could lead to a concentration of ripening in August. Average yields per hectare should be lower than last year.
In the south, the drought is less serious as there are good levels in the reservoirs. First figures show that total surfaces are 4% lower than last year but the exact surface will be confirmed early July after the aerial survey.
The total forecast for Italy is maintained at 5 million tonnes but could be reduced due to the situation in the north.

Portugal
The heatwave has also affected the country but it has been less intense than in Spain. The weather is now good and the crop quality looks good. The initial forecast is maintained. The harvest will start earlier than usual, during week starting 17 July.

Spain
There has been a tremendous heatwave during the last ten days with maximum temperatures of 44°C and minimums of 26°C, which is exceptional for June. The temperatures have now dropped to more normal levels. The heat will have caused some flower abortions and other damages but it is now too early to evaluate the losses. The claims of high losses made in the press by growers’ organisations are too premature and the forecast is maintained for the time being. The harvest will start early, during week starting 17 July in Extremadura.

Outside the EU
Turkey
The weather has been fairly stable with some hot weather forecast but no heatwave. The forecast remains the same.

Ukraine
Everything is ok with weather and tomatoes. Majority of plants is developing according to schedule. There were some rains and hail last week, luckily without serious impact on tomatoes. The forecast remains the same at 650,000 tonnes.

Other WPTC countries
California
California like other areas has experienced extreme heat over the last week. Of concern is how much if any bloom drop/incomplete pollination we will see on the later end of the crop. While it is too early to tell for sure the impact on the crop, most believe there will be some and to what degree we will need more time to determine as crop develops. Most processors in the Southern part of the state indicate a start date around July 7-10 for the non-organic crop.

Canada
Ontario’s tomato growing region has experienced very wet weather which caused some delays in planting. However, most plantings have been completed and with reasonably warm weather, we anticipate a normal harvest timeline. One of the smaller organic processor has experienced financial issues and has gone into receivership/sale mode. As a result, seedlings for about 100 ha are still in greenhouses.

China
The total acreage is around 938,000 mu (62,533 ha) and the forecast remain as 5.5 million metric tonnes. The weather conditions are normal and harvest will begin around 5-10 August, similar as last year.

Japan
The forecast remains 31,000 tonnes for a surface of approximately 450 hectares.

South Africa
The harvest season has ended in the Western Cape and has started in the Limpopo Province. The current crop estimate is about 160,000 tonnes compared to the 140,000 tonnes of last year.

Other countries
Other US States
After a wet beginning to the planting season, better weather ensued and the last two-thirds of the crop, while bunched, looks strong.

Poland
The forecast remains unchanged at 180,000 tonnes, but the good current weather conditions could lead to increase volumes if they continue.
