WPTC crop update as of 15 September 2017

15/09/2017 - WPTC - 2017 Season - Lire en français

The latest forecast released by the WPTC on 15 September maintains the global production at 37.6 million metric tonnes for the 2017 season.

AMITOM countries
EU countries:
France
The harvest is progressing well both in the South-East and the South-West with 126 000 tonnes processed at the end of last week. Yield and quality, including brix, are good in both regions and the final volume could be slightly higher than the 190 000 tonnes forecast. No rain is forecast and the harvest should continue until mid-October.

Greece
In the South, all factories finished last week after a good season with about 100 000 tonnes processed in the region. In the central region and the North, the harvest continues with a good brix but low yields (sometimes down to 20-30 mT/ha when 100 mT/ha were expected). The harvest will finish by the end of September with a 400 000 tonnes total still expected.

Italy
In Northern Italy, already 2.01 million tonnes had been processed as of 3 September with an average brix of 4.74°. There were very heavy rainfalls last week and factories stopped their production for a couple of days, before restarting on 13 September. A few companies have already finished their programs, while the rest are planning to run another 2 weeks to complete programs. The season should finish before the end of the month. More rain is forecast next weekend and this could negatively affect the rest of the harvest.
At this stage, a final estimation of more than 2.6 million tonnes is expected for northern Italy. This increase is mainly due to the high yields per hectare registered. On the other hand, processing yields remain lower than standard, mainly due to the low brix of the crop.

In Southern Italy, the crop is developing fast and several factories have already closed. As of 3 September, about 2.06 million tonnes had been processed. During last weekend there was some heavy rainfall, but they were limited in tomato growing areas and did not cause major damage.
According to the satellite survey, more than 4 000 ha remain to be harvested, so the volume in the South could reach 2.4 million tonnes. So the final total for Italy should be about 5 million tonnes.

Spain
In Andalucía, the harvest is nearly finished, with two factories already closed and the last one closing by next week. The season was good, with average yields of 100 mT/ha.
In Extremadura, after low production during the first 2-3 weeks in August, the conditions and volumes processed have been back to normal in the last few weeks and the good weather should continue until the end of the month. Factories are starting to slow down this week but should continue operations until 20-25 September.
In the Ebro Valley, some heavy storms at the end of August affected fields and lowered yields. Production is now at full capacity and should continue until 20 October.
Due to the good conditions in September, total production could now slightly exceed the 3.2 million tonnes forecast.

Portugal
Over 70% of the forecast had been processed as of the end of last week. The forecast remains at a maximum of 1.5 million tonnes to be processed.

Outside the EU
Turkey
The season is winding down and is expected to be finished within a week to 10 days, with factories slowly shutting down. Fruit quality towards the end has dropped, with solids dropping even lower than before. The volume is expected to reach a maximum of 1.9 million tonnes. Some facilities have already started to switch to red pepper production. The weather at the moment looks dry and will allow for the last of the raw materials to be harvested.

Ukraine
As of 13 September, at least 60% of the processing program had been achieved by most factories. The weather remains excellent and harvesting is going well. Growers are complaining that they have slightly more tomatoes than processors can take in. The quality of tomatoes is good everywhere and brix levels are higher than usual in all growing regions. The season might last until 6 October. The forecast has been confirmed at a level of 650 000 tonnes of fresh tomatoes.

Other WPTC countries
Brazil
The Brazilian tomato season has experienced good weather conditions so far, with better brix levels and yields than other years. The estimate remains at 17 200 hectares planted, for a crop of 1.4 million metric tonnes.

California
The estimate is that 857 000 short tons (777 400 metric tonnes) will be processed this week. At the end of the week (16 September), the industry will have processed approximately 8.50 million short tons (7.71 million metric tonnes). The crop continues to be impacted by the adverse growing/weather conditions experienced this year. In the last crop report, the estimate was lowered to 11 million short tons (9.97 million metric tonnes). At this time, it appears the crop will be even lower, but to what degree is not certain. Given the uncertainty, the official estimate should remain at 11 million short tons. Harvesting will continue until the middle of October, with processors finishing between now and then.

Canada
The 2017 processing season is still underway. Reports are that yield, color and solids continue to be very good. The warmer weather is very welcome after the unseasonably cool temperatures experienced during the first ten days of September.

China
The total volume processed by 13 September was about 4.4 million tonnes. Some factories in Xinjiang were shut down or suspended their operations due environmental protection measures, which caused some loss of fresh tomatoes. Other factories have been operating at full capacity. Processors in Inner Mongolia finished processing this week. Recent weather conditions were good in south Xinjiang but there were scattered rains in north Xinjiang. The total estimated quantity remains at 5.5 million tonnes.

South Africa
The current crop estimate for the 2017 crop is maintained at 160 000 tonnes. The warm weather could negatively influence the yield. Planting operations for the new season crop in the Western Cape have been delayed due to the effect of the drought and low dam levels.

Other countries
Hungary
All the harvesting and processing is proceeding as planned and the largest processor has reported that on 15 September, 80% of the planned quantities had been harvested. If the weather remains ideal, the harvest will finish at the end of September. The ideal weather conditions so far mean that fruit quality is high.

Poland
Despite the weather problems, the forecast has been increased from 160 000 tonnes to 175 000 tonnes. About 20-25% of the fields were damaged before harvesting by hail and rain, but the rest of the fields have given high yields (very often over 100 mT/ha). Processors, however, need good weather without frost until the middle of October.

Other US states
The Midwest has had very good dry harvesting conditions but it has been relatively cool so ripening has been somewhat delayed. Heavy harvesting activity is expected until the end of the season, now that the harvest has caught up with the heaviest planting period. Quality has been good and tonnage is as expected, with some growers reporting record yields, while others have suffered water damage from storms in the summer.

(article corrected on 19/09/2017-  the total crop forecast was stated at 38.6 million tonnes when it should have read 37.6 million tonnes)
