Northern Italy: price agreement of EUR 88 for processing tomatoes

18/02/2020 - Press release , François-Xavier Branthôme - 2020 Season
OI President Rabboni: “New and relevant tasks for the Interprofession"
Deposit of contracts by OI by 6 march

The reference price for processing tomatoes grown in northern Italy during the 2020 season was signed on the evening of 13 February in Parma. The figure on which the various parties have agreed is EUR 88 per metric tonne, services included, just slightly higher than the EUR 87 concluded last year. It has been agreed that the base 100, which serves as a reference for the "soluble solids" payment, is to be shifted from 4.95 to 4.90 Brix degrees, to bring it closer to the real average for the territory considered as a whole. A big innovation comes into effect this year in terms of programming, agreed between POs (Producers Organizations) and processing operators, with the setting of maximum surface areas and quantity targets allocated individually to each PO. The reference price for organic tomato was set at 136 Euro/mT.

The Northern Italy IO has been entrusted with the core function of recording the contracts submitted by March 6 at the latest and of verifying the conditions established by the programming. Any breach of commitments (with excess surface areas and quantities) will result in economic sanctions, the amounts of which will be allocated to the constitution of a fund, managed by the IO, for the development of the sector.
The overall value of the operations generated last year in favor of the tomato supply chain as a whole, thanks to the work of the Northern Italy IO, has been estimated at EUR 615 000.

"I congratulate the agricultural part and the industrial part - comments Tiberio Rabboni, president of the Interprofessional Organization OI industrial tomato from Northern Italy which, as is known, by law cannot take part in the negotiation nor communicate the contents of the agreement - for a timely contract with respect to the crop calendar and full of positive innovations as regards the production planning objectives to align and stabilize agricultural supplies to real industrial and market needs. In this regard, the framework agreement introduces a new and more significant role for the inter-professional organization given the programming, agreed between the Op and the processing industries, which has set maximum surface and quantity objectives for the allocation of each individual Op. OI of Northern Italy, which provided fundamental technical support in the phase of defining the programming objectives, is confirmed in the task of receiving the deposit of contracts by March 6 and assigned the new and central task of verifying the conditions established by the programming. Any failure to comply with the commitments (for excess surface area and quantities) will result in economic deductions which will form a fund, managed by the OI, for the development of the supply chain. It is an important and expected novelty which further qualifies our organization as a guarantee “superpartes” and which will strengthen the efficiency and operational cohesion of the entire supply chain in Northern Italy ".
