Italtom/Ferrara Food, Italy's biggest tomato processing group

"We are going to give up on tomato paste"

On 5 April, Dario Squeri (Steriltom) and Gian Mario Bosoni (Emiliana Conserve), presented the new company Italtom, which has taken over the tenancy of the bankrupt Ferrara Foods company, and now carries the industrial project of what is currently the biggest Italian tomato processing group of the sector, with more than half a million tonnes of tomatoes processed and almost one quarter of northern Italy's total production.

Italtom's executive team have stated that the company's future operations will take place under the banner of typical Italian tomato production, innovation and quality, and they have announced a recovery in terms of industrial activity – EUR 4 million have already been invested –, but also in terms of territorial implantation, trade, agriculture and institutional partnerships.
Mr. Squeri explained that "With Italtom, we are going to extend the range of first-stage processing industrial products in order to increase our competitiveness on the global market, and measure up to the industry's giants like China and Spain, which will require a concentration of companies and of the big production operations. Product innovation will be essential, with pulps, drum conditioning and bag-in-box conditioning, all of which will be produced on three new processing lines. But we intend to drop the production of pastes, which was the weak point of Ferrara foods." "For this first season, added Mr. Bosoni, we are planning a production of 90 000 tonnes, which is approximately half of the factory's capacity. If we buy the plant, we intend to take operations next year to the maximum of the plant's capacity, and also start processing organic tomatoes."

Tomatoes at EUR 82 per tonne
Dario Squeri underlined the importance of relationships with growers: "This region is particularly suitable for growing tomatoes and enjoys great prospects for development, which we will be exploring with growers, Producers' Organizations and unions. With a contract price for raw materials that is higher than the one agreed in Northern Italy, and fixed at EUR 82/mT (instead of EUR 79.75/mT), we are sending a strong signal to Ferrara growers. We have also already guaranteed to POs that this price will be paid."

Oi Nord Italia:
"We do not deal with the determination of the price"
OI Pomodoro Industria Nord Italia points out that, contrary to what was reported in the press release that announced the birth of the new company, it has no role in terms of determining the price of the raw processing tomato in Northern Italy, as bargaining is an activity that is carried out autonomously from Op, producer organizations and processing companies. The OI performs functions to support the self- regulation and territorial projects of the components of the supply chain, but is not allowed by law to deal with the determination of the price.

Steriltom is a leader in the field of tomato products aimed at the catering industry, with a declared turnover of EUR 65 million. As for Emiliana Conserve, the company exports to 80 different countries, for a turnover of EUR 70 million. Each of these two entities processes approximately 200 000 tonnes of tomatoes per season.
