Extremadura to control tomato haulage

13/07/2020 - Sophie Colvine
The Governement of Extremadura has issued a press release to announce that during the coming tomato processing season, which is due to start during the last week of July until the end of September, it will strengthen controls over the transport of tomatoes by road. It highlighted the necessity to monitor the vehicles in charge of this transport in order for traffic incidents to be prevented. Data show a slight drop in the number of traffic incidents caused by tomato shippers in 2019 compared to the previous campaign, from 74 to 71 incidents. There has also been less material removed from the roads than in the 2018 campaign. The Guardia Civil also remind operators that the use of masks is mandatory for transporters in the event that they are inspected or stopped at any of the controls carried out within the framework of the campaign.

This issue is a recurrent problem in many tomato processing region and our Editors will look into it for a futur article looking at regulations and initiatives around the world.
