Extremadura: increase in the contracted tomato acreage

06/05/2020 - François-Xavier Branthôme - 2020 Season - Lire en français
24,000 hectares of tomatoes should be planted in Extremadura

The tomato campaign has already started in the Spanish region of Extremadura with the planting of 13,772 hectares by growers from cooperatives and Producer Organizations associated with Cooperativas Agro-alimentarias Extremadura. The acreage devoted to this crop in the region is expected to amount to 24,000 hectares and the initial contract is for almost 2,199,724 metric tonnes (mT).

According to the figures provided by cooperatives, the data confirms an increase in the contracted tomato acreage (+4.5%), from the 22,907 hectares contracted at the beginning of the 2019 campaign to this year's 24,000 hectares. Total tomato contracting in Extremadura has increased by 7% compared to the previous campaign, when it stood at 2,043,790 mT, although the final production delivered amounted to 2,209,355 mT.

The cooperatives and Producer Organizations associated with the aforementioned federation said they have initially contracted almost 1,247,967 mT for this 2020 season, which is 57% of the region's tomato procurement and an increase compared to the initial figure of the previous campaign, which was 1,194,306 mT.

Likewise, the volume contracted by the four industries of the cooperative sector (Carnes y Vegetales, Pronat, Tomalia and Tomates del Guadiana) amounts to 825,405 mT, which is 5% more than last season's initial figure, in which these cooperative industries transformed more than 850,000 mT. These four industries thus account for 38% of the initial contracting in the region, which amounts to 2,187,226 tonnes. For this season, the cooperative industries should mobilize 9,097 hectares, which represents 38% of the total area - or 23,922 hectares - which should be dedicated to the processing tomato this year if all can be planted.

In Andalusia, the areas mobilized for processing tomatoes are expected to amount to 6,400 hectares, for an expected production of around 650,000 metric tonnes. To these quantities are added those grown in the rest of Spain, in particular in the Ebro valley (around 210,000 mT planned over an area of around 2,475 hectares) and in the central part of the country (85,000 mT over 1,000 hectares about).
