California 2020: Crop situation as of 1 Aug., projection to 8 Aug.

04/08/2020 - François-Xavier Branthôme - 2020 Season
For the fifth week of harvest (ending August 1st) PTAB estimates are 863,000 short tons (sT) (782,827 metric tonnes (mT)) to be delivered. Provisional total (2,153,305 sT or 1,953,263 mT) is 19% lower than the average quantity processed during past three seasons at this time (2.66 million sT).
Another 963,563 sT (874,048 mT) are estimated to be harvested during the week 6 (ending 8 August). If achieved, this would bring the provisional total up to 3,116,868 sT, (or 2,827,311 mT). Due to a hot and dry summer, processing is still expected to start around August 15th in the US Midwest, for an estimated crop of 450,000 sT.

The 2020 California Organic processing tomato deliveries for the week ending July 25th were 72,775 sT (66,014 mT) bringing the provisional total to 228,451 sT (or 207,228 mT). At this time, organic quantities account for 8% of total harvested quantity. With two processors completed with organic, the upcoming weeks will see a decline in organic tons processed.

According to the figures available, the current harvest path is 508,918 sT (461,640 mT) behind the average of the quantities harvested at the same date (end of week 5) in the past three years. Quantities being harvested represent almost 26% of the official target of the season (12.0 million sT, or 10.886 million mT).
